But is the industry finally waking up to the opportunities that older generations present, both in campaigns and behind the scenes?
Is there a responsibility for cultural institutions to not just reflect the past, but contemplate the future as well? AI is often viewed as the death of creativity. Yet, as Maximilian Niemann, a director at Unit9 production company, points out, when machines are used in collaboration with humans, it may actually make for better work. Focusing on an unlikely friendship that forms between a young boy and his new intergalactic companion, the spot is all about the little things that matter during the festive season.
Since the s, the filmmaker and artist has turned his lens towards the fringes. He talks to us about relinquishing control, Hollywood reboot culture, and how a Gucci mini-series captured the spirit of his early works. For decades, comic books have showcased vibrant graphic design that is a pivotal part of the superhero world. The Ghana-based photographer discusses the challenges of being a female photographer in Africa and why she hopes her images inspire others to see the value in creative jobs.
We look at how graphic design and illustration brought the movie to life. Daniel Kleinman has been the creative mind behind almost every title sequence since the 90s. The photographer switched his focus from the hip-hop scene to the Black Lives Matter movement last year in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. Interest in home improvement exploded in the wake of the pandemic. In the competitive world of illustration, adopting a signature motif or icon in your work can help you grow your brand and your career.
NB The speed of communication has increased a hundred times over and the studio has evolved to meet that speed. Clients need intelligent solutions that can cut through the noise, seek out their audience, grab their attention and speak to them boldly, simply and clearly. We work with a talented team of designers, strategists, account directors and collaborators to get that right. EM What is Creative Courage?
With Creative Courage in our back pocket we have heard poets, chefs and magicians speak about creativity. Nice format, nice size, nice headline, get a nice story going. Or vice versa. With Mothercare, they were getting off the cuff solutions from retail designs and they loved us because we had a very different approach and ended up working on everything for them. All jobs, big or small, take the same amount of time and thinking. Not as much as we should do. We did all the Tate membership years ago, so we give all our staff Tate membership and say go next door, get out and take a walk around an art gallery.
Pop art is probably my favourite. Anyone can look at all these websites and find a nice bit of typography and copy it. You really had to think about what you wanted to do and have a solid idea before you had it made, as the nearest copier was two miles away in the town centre.
I used to fucking hate typesetting, seriously it was the most boring thing ever. Non-thinking, trying not to think about it. I think that your subconscious has already got it, and you need to wait for your conscious mind to catch up with your subconscious mind. Trying not to think about something is the hardest, because as a designer you think about it all the time. Friendly, happy people without agendas.
Really fucking talented people. Not people up their own assholes. We will go to talks and private views and we put on Creative Courage events at our studio — magicians, poets and theatre producers have all visited.
We try to keep Fridays meeting-free so we can concentrate on work and we finish early so we can get together and meet an inspirational speaker, collaborator or just run through exciting project briefs or show off our latest work to each other. We do get our team involved in the occasional training course. We have a few in the diary that we hope will inspire us to think about the commercial side of creativity differently.
We often work on self-initiated projects as a studio. Check out whatifcricket. Portfolio Reviews Pep Talk. Interview by Laura Snoad. In the Studio With. The team at work. Nick Finney at work. The Team. The Work. Outisde NB Studio. Inside NB Studio. The Culture.
